Deadline looming for healthcare signup

Posted: Updated:

Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act ends on Sunday and if you haven't signed up for healthcare you are going to have to fork out a little more cash on your taxes.

In 2014 the penalty for not having healthcare is $95, or 1% of your income, whichever is greater.

In 2015 the fee jumps to 2% of your income, or $325.

As a trained healthcare navigator, Nancy Muzzarelli can't sign you up for healthcare, but she can point you in the right direction.

"Usually we can get it down to 7, 8, to 10 plans and it makes it a little easier," said Nancy Muzzarelli.

In the past easy wasn't something many people associated with signing up for healthcare, but Muzzarelli says this new system has been streamlined, and depending on your plan you can even keep your favorite doctor.

"Each plan has a list of the provider network that the plan has,” said Muzzarelli. “You can find out if the doctor you prefer, the one you go to is in that network or not."

Providing healthcare that Muzzarelli says you don't want to wait for.

"There's a huge volume on those last few days and it's not impossible to imagine that the website could crash like it did last year so it's best not to wait until the last minute," said Muzzarelli.

Shawnee Health Care is working overtime to make sure that you get covered by staying open until 11:00 p.m., and opening on Saturday and Sunday.
