Man arrested after holding three children hostage in a rural home

HARDIN COUNTY, IL -

Illinois State Police are investigating a barricaded hostage situation that occurred on Sunday in rural Hardin County.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office was called to a home on Illinois Route 1, Cave In Rock just before 1:30 p.m.

The woman who called 911 said she had escaped from an armed man inside the home.

The woman said three children were inside and that the suspect had fired the gun several times.

Illinois State Police were called in to assist.

One child was able to escape.

Thirty minutes later, the suspect attempted to leave the home in a vehicle and was arrested without incident.

The other two children were found unharmed.

36-year-old Clarence Harley Smock of Cave In Rock was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Restraint, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Domestic Battery.

Smock is being held at the Massac County Jail. Bond has been set at $100,000.

A motive has not been determined and the investigation continues.
