Paducah warming center offers people relief from the cold

Posted: Updated:
PADUCAH - First - snow.  Then dangerous sub-zero temperatures.  Our Mychaela Bruner shows us a place where people in need can stay warm.

If you have been outside, you know how bitterly cold it is.  Volunteers are working to get more cots here at this warming center for the nights ahead.

Earlier this morning, there were about 30 people sleeping at the warming center in Paducah.  The facility can hold about 75 people, but there are only enough cots for 41.  Volunteer Holly Long said the warming center has been open 24/7 since Saturday.

"We do a light breakfast, the community kitchen serves lunch here during the week and the evenings we have a hot supper and they can stay for the night," said Long.

Joey and Angela Pavone have been staying at the warming shelter for several days now.

"Honestly without this place, I don't know where we would be. We have no help, right now we are going day for day, right now I'm not thinking about the future because it's so cold, I'm thinking about warming up," said Pavone.

The warming center operates entirely off of donations and volunteers.

The Paducah Warming Center and Community Kitchen are located on Martin Luther King Junior Drive.  The center said it will not turn anyone away.

There are other warming centers open across the Local 6 region. Click here for more information.
