No charges to be filed in death of SIU Carbondale student

Posted: Updated:
CARBONDALE, IL - No charges will be filed in the death of SIU Carbondale student, Pravin Varughese.

Jackson County State's Attorney Michael Carr says a grand jury could not find enough evidence to charge Gaege Bethune.

Bethune is believed to be the last person to have seen Varughese alive.

Varughese was found dead in the woods in Carbondale two years ago.

Bethune told police he was giving a ride to Varughese when they began fighting.

That is when Pravin reportedly took off in to the woods.

Shortly after that Bethune was pulled over by Illinois State Police Trooper Chris Martin.

Bethune told the trooper that Pravin was in the woods and Martin briefly looked for him before leaving.

Pravin's mother, Lovely Varughese, tells Local 6 she is sad and upset by the decision.

She has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Bethune and the City of Carbondale.
