Murray-Calloway Parks Receive $100,000 Donation

MURRAY, Ky - A Murray-Calloway Parks Referendum didn't pass in November's election, but donors are stepping up to help park renovations. An anonymous donor gave $100,000 to renovate Chestnut Park in Murray.

Park Director Tab Brockman said its the oldest park in the area, dating back almost 70 years.

Brockman said a committee is working with the donor to determine how to use the money. They're looking at possibly re-doing the basketball courts, adding a water fountain, renovating the playground as well as bathrooms, and adding new mulch.

Brockman said while this is a great gift it will run out quickly.

"That's why we have a committee looking at these things to determine, along with the donor, what would be the appropriate course of action," Brockman said.

He said just replacing the playground mulch will cost over $4,000.

"What this donor is really hoping for is that other folks will see what we can accomplish with this gift and go, 'I'll may be able to step up and help as well,'" Brockman said.

Brockman said they plan on meeting with the donor soon to determine what will be added or fixed at Chestnut Park. To donate, contact Murray- Calloway County Parks &  Recreation at 270-762-0325.
