Be On The Lookout: Series of car break-ins in Carbondale

Posted: Updated:
CARBONDALE, IL - In this week's Be On The Lookout we're warning you about a series of car break-ins in Carbondale. They all share a common trait that could have helped prevent the crimes.

First, a car was broken into in the 300 block of East Hester. Items were stolen. Police learned about this one on March 8, but it's believed this crime happened between 7:00 a.m. on February 21 and 4:30 p.m. on March 7.

Then, two cars were broken into between the night of March 11 and the morning of March 12. One of the crimes happened in the 100 block of South Glenview, the other in the 200 block of South Emerald. Both burglaries happened between 6:45 p.m. on March 11 and 6:30 a.m. on March 12.

Finally, just about a mile up the road in a parking lot in the 600 block of West Main, a car was broken into between 8:30 p.m. on March 11 and 8:00 a.m. on March 12.

The common thread to all of these cases? All the car doors were unlocked. Police say one of the best ways to prevent car burglaries and break-ins is to lock your car doors.

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the Carbondale Police Department at (618) 457-3200. You can also call Crime Stoppers at (618) 549-COPS (2677).
