Atmos Energy says it's important to call 811 before digging in yards because the highest risk to underground natural gas pipelines is accidental damage that happens during digging. Calling 811 before digging connects property owners and contractors to their state's one-call center that lets all appropriate utilities know about the excavation. The company says professional locators then mark all underground utility lines at the digging site with flags or spray paint.
The Yard Rescue 811 contest is open to all residents in communities served by Atmos Energy Corporation's natural gas distribution divisions in Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia. It excludes company employees, vendors, suppliers, agencies and 811 damage-prevention centers.
The contest ends at midnight, central time, on April 24.
