A man and woman were arrested in Mortons Gap Tuesday night on synthetic drug trafficking, endangering the welfare of a minor, and other charges after a traffic stop made by deputies, according to the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office.
Hopkins County Sheriff's Deputies Ryan Bailey and Josh Travis stopped a blue 2004 Chevrolet Van at about 9:46 p.m. Tuesday for an equipment violation. The stop was conducted in front of a hotel room at the Pennyrile Inn where the van's occupants were staying.
The sheriff's department says the driver, 46-year-old Jody Stiles, dropped a baggie of prescription controlled substances on the ground and tried to destroy them with her foot. Stiles was arrested, and the deputies found several baggies containing synthetic marijuana on her person.
The passenger, 51-year-old Roger Thomas, was also arrested. acted disorderly and, the sheriff's department says he, "became extremely disorderly and was noticeably under the influence of drugs."
When deputies searched the van, a duffel bag containing "several pounds of suspected synthetic marijuana" was found. Near the duffel bag, deputies found two rifles, a shotgun, and a large machete hidden next to the passenger's seat.
The sheriff's department says it discovered during a welfare check that the subjects' underage daughter had been left alone in the hotel room with synthetic drugs and multiple items of drug paraphernalia.
Stiles was charged with a first offense of driving under the influence, carrying concealed weapon, third degree possession of controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, a first offense of trafficking in synthetic drugs (weapon enhanced), possession of synthetic drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of a minor, and a first offense of prescription controlled substance not in a proper container.
Thomas was charged with a first offense of trafficking in synthetic drugs (weapon enhanced), carrying concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, second degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a minor, and public intoxication of a controlled substance.
