Mayfield Independent Schools names Henderson new Superintendent

Posted: Updated:
Mayfield Independent Schools named Assistant Superintendent Joe Henderson its next superintendent Thursday, succeeding Lonnie Burgett, who has held the position for 21 years.

The school system began searching for a new superintendent after Burgett's announcement late last year that he planned to retire from the position he's held since 1994. A search committee narrowed the field of many applicants to three. Henderson was chosen after members of the board of education met with and interviewed each candidate.

Henderson's tenure will will start after Burgett's retirement, slated for June 30.

Henderson previously served as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Instructional Programs beginning in 2008, a position he moved into after serving as principal of Mayfield Middle School. The educator first came to the district in 2001 as a physical education and health instructor and assistant football coach.

The district noted that Henderson implemented district-wide professional learning communities and district-wide leadership teams as assistant superintendent. The district's overall graduation rate increased from 73.4 percent to 94 percent in the past five years, and Mayfield High School's college and career readiness scores improved by 23 percent to 72.5 percent —10 points above the state average — in the past three years. The district also received a proficient rating on the 2013-2014 report under the Unbridled Learning College/Career-Readiness for All accountability system.

“I am grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank all that were involved in the selection process,” Henderson saod. “In moving forward, I assure everyone that all of our decisions and focus will be centered on what is best for our students.”
