The founder of Discovery Park of America, Robert Kirkland, died at 7:15 Saturday morning in his home. Kirkland and his wife Jenny donated more than $142 million to create Discovery Park of America in Union City, TN.

A Celebration-of-Life will be at Discovery Park of America on Wednesday, April 15th.  Discovery Park will close on Wednesday to the general public.

Visitation with the family is from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and services will begin at 2:00, with remarks from lifelong friend Jim Rippy and several family members.  There will be no additional ceremonies after the Celebration-of-Life at Discovery Park.

Mr. Kirkland's family has requested that all memorials be made to Discovery Park of America's Education Department for scholarships for children who might not be able to afford to come to the park.

Kirkland's close friend and CEO of Discovery Park of America, Jim Rippy, released the following statement:

“Today marks a very sad day as I lose a life-long friend, Robert Kirkland.  We have been friends for as long as I remember and I will miss him.  Robert has been a great friend to me, to this community and to this region.  We have him to thank for many wonderful things that have happened in this area.”   ~Jim Rippy, CEO Discovery Park of America and Lifelong Friend of Robert Kirkland
