Child Abuse Prevention Awareness

Posted: Updated:
PADUCAH - One in every 100 children in the United States has suffered abuse.  April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.  It is a time to acknowledge communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect and to promote the emotional well-being of children.

Child Watch Counseling and Advocacy Center Executive Director Lee Emmons said it is important to understand that child abuse does happen, but it is even more important to know that prevention does work.

"In Kentucky, there are 16,000 to 17,000 confirmed reports of child abuse every year. Somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 of those occur in the eight counties in our area," said Emmons.

Emmons said everyone should know the warning signs.

"Teachers may see bruises, pediatricians who treat them repeatedly may see other signs. There is a law in Kentucky, every adult is required to report that," said Emmons.

Emmons said most cases are neglect.  This month, Emmons and others at Child Watch are launching the campaign, "Random Acts of Prevention" to bring more attention to child abuse cases.
