WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL -

A motorcycle rider was killed after he hit two semis on Interstate 57.

Illinois State Police say the crash happened around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday evening.

According to a preliminary investigation, two semis were traveling side by side northbound as they passed Exit 59 to Herrin Road.

A motorcycle was merging onto I-57 from Herrin Road and failed to yield the right of way to the semi in the right lane. The driver of the semi hit his brakes to avoid hitting the motorcycle.

The motorcycle continued past the front of the semi and into the left lane where it hit the trailer of the second semi.

After hitting the trailer, the rider was ejected from the motorcycle and hit by the semi in the right lane.

The rider of the motorcycle, 41-year-old James Randolph of Christopher, IL, was killed in the crash.

Neither of the two semi drivers were injured.

Troopers say the cause of the accident was the the motorcycle rider failing to yield while merging.

No charges have been filed. An investigation continues.
