Former probation officer charged with evidence tampering, forgery, misconduct

Posted: Updated:
BENTON, Ky - A former probation officer has been charged with tampering with physical evidence, second degree forgery and first degree official misconduct, Kentucky State Police announced Wednesday.

State Police say in February, at the request of the Kentucky Department of Corrections, it began investigating an incident of alleged misconduct by an officer relating to a parolee and the administration of a field drug test. Detective Sgt. Dean Patterson began investigating the incident, which KSP says involved Probation Officer Robert “Bobby” Johnston, 40, of Benton, that happened on Dec. 2, 2014.

Johnston resigned from his position during the course of the investigation. After the investigation, KSP alleged Johnston inaccurately reported the results of a field drug test on a parolee he was investigating in Marshall County.

Patterson testified before a Marshall County Grand Jury about his investigation on April 16.  The grand jury returned indictments for the charges listed above. Johnston was served a criminal summons on Monday, April 20, for the charges. Patterson continues the investigation.
