Gunman killed in standoff with police

Posted: Updated:

Illinois State Police say a gunman was shot and killed Tuesday morning following a standoff in Marion, Illinois.

Lieutenant William Sons with ISP says the incident began just before 3:30 a.m. when a Marion police officer noticed the dome lights on in two cars at the Appletree Apartments at 109 Russell Street.

The officer saw that one of the vehicles had gloves and ammunition inside. The officer then heard a female screaming from an apartment at 1408 West Main Street.

The officer was then fired upon by the suspect, 27-year-old Joshua Green, and a hostage situation began. The neighborhood was evacuated and streets were closed off.

Marion's Emergency Response Team, the Williamson County Sheriff's Department, and Illinois State Police were called to the scene.

Just before 7:30 a.m., after lengthy negotiations, Green exited the apartment with the female he was holding. Officers ordered Green to surrender but he refused.

Green then drew a concealed firearm and fired on officers a second time. Officers fired back and hit him. Green was declared dead at the scene.

The female being held was injured in the gunfire and flown to a trauma center out of state for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Streets around the area of the standoff are expected to be closed off for an extended period of time.

The investigation by Illinois State Police continues.
