Morning standoff ends in shootout

MARION, IL -

A man is dead and a woman was shot after an early morning police standoff in Marion, Illinois.

Illinois State Police say 27-year-old Joshua Green was killed after shooting at officers multiple times.

This wasn't Green's first run-in with the law. In 2011, the Marion native was convicted on burglary charges and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Green was released on parole by the Illinois Department of Corrections in January.

Green's mother, Brenda, found out he was involved in the standoff after seeing it on TV when she got home from work.

"I called my oldest son, asked if Josh was there, and he said no,” Brenda said. “I asked him if he had talked to him, and he said no, but he told me the standoff was my son."

Marion Police noticed Green's car sitting outside of the home around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday with the dome light on.

ISP Lt. William Sons said officers saw gloves and ammunition in the car, and then heard a scream.

"While investigating the screams that he heard the officer was fired upon," Sons said.

That was the start of the four hour hostage situation that came to a head around 7:25 a.m., when police say Green came outside using a woman as a shield.

"Green refused to surrender at that point,” Sons said. “He had a firearm on his person. Green drew the firearm and fired on officers for a second time. Officers returned fire, striking Green."

"The police officers had been trying to talk to Josh, and I said 'Can I try?'” Brenda said. “She said 'No ma'am. He's deceased.'"

That left the mother in shock with a number of questions that may never be answered.

"I don't know where he got a gun,” Brenda said. “He wasn't that type. He wouldn't hurt anyone."

The woman Green used as a shield was hit during the shootout and flown to an out-of-state hospital, but it's not clear if she was shot by Green or accidentally by police.

There is no word on the woman's name or status.
