JACKSON CO, IL -

A Carbondale man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for stealing two vehicles.

Jackson County State's Attorney Michael Carr says on June 26, 2014, Carbondale police officers were called to a hit and run on South Wall Street.

The victim and other witnesses told police that 45-year-old Bernard Adams had rammed the victim's car with a stolen car. An Illinois State Police Trooper also saw the incident.

Officers began looking for the defendant and found the stolen car in a field near the crash, but Adams was gone.

A short time later, officers received a report of another stolen vehicle. A delivery driver for the Daily Egyptian said he was making his usual delivery to the Circle K on East Walnut Street when someone stole his delivery truck from the parking lot.

Officers began looking for the truck and spotted it near the Interstate 57 overpass in Marion. A chase began as officers pursued Adams on Route 13 towards Carbondale. At times, the pursuit exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Officers were able to stop the stolen truck on North Brush Street in Carbondale and, after a short foot pursuit, arrested Adams.

Adams pled guilty to two counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle on Tuesday. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison and will serve 3 years of mandatory supervised release upon completing his prison sentence.
