MARION, IL -
Marion Water Department Director Cindy Givens tells Local 6 that scammers are calling business clients in Marion, Illinois, and telling them their water will be shut off if they don't pay their water bill in full by 6 p.m.
The scammers are asking people to use a credit card to pay the full amount of their bills or have money wired into an account. Givens says the city is not responsible for the calls, and the authorities are working to figure out where the calls are coming from.
Givens added that businesses are panicking, thinking the calls are real, and trying to pay because they can't afford to be closed for the weekend without water. If you receive a call like this, know that it's a scam.
