A man from Eddyville, Kentucky is recovering in an intensive care unit after being shot by a trooper during a standoff with Kentucky State Police.
A report from Trooper First Class Jay Thomas says KSP executed a search warrant at a home on Bryson Road in Eddyville early Saturday morning. Thomas says the troopers knocked on the door and identified themselves. The report says 51 year-old John C. Smith answered the door and pointed a handgun and a laser pointing device at the troopers. After Smith refused several times to drop his weapon, a trooper shot him in the abdomen. Lyon County EMS transported him to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah. He has undergone surgery and is currently recovering.
KSP says they found approximately 10 ounces of crystal meth with a street value of $18,000 from the home. They also seized several guns and a large amount of cash. Another suspect inside the home, 41 year-old Patricia A. Kilgore, was also arrested.
Smith is facing charges of trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Kilgore is being charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. She's lodged in the Caldwell County Jail.
The name of the trooper who shot Smith will be released later this week along with new information, according to Trooper Jay Thomas' report. He is on paid administrative leave as of Saturday morning.
