McCracken County Sheriff's Department: Golightly terminated
Detective Cory Golightly
MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY -
The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says it has terminated a deputy whose weapon accidentally discharged during a wedding in Carlisle County on May 2. The bullet struck the deputy's mother, who was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
The former deputy, Cory Golightly, was placed on administrative leave after the incident at Bardwell Baptist Church. The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says it considered statements from Golightly and a preliminary report the Carlisle County Sheriff's Office provided on May 8 in its investigation.
Golightly was terminated Monday, the sheriff's department says, "due to departmental policy infractions, including the departmental policy on the use and handling of weapons."
The sheriff's department noted that Golightly had a previous unintentional discharge of his weapon on April 16, 2010. That time, the bullet struck another McCracken Deputy in the foot.
