Former Md. Gov. O'Malley jumps into 2016 Democratic race

Posted: Updated:
BALTIMORE (AP) - Martin O'Malley says he's running for president because voters deserve a choice. The former Maryland governor and Baltimore mayor says the presidency "is not a crown to be passed back and forth" between "two royal families."

The 52-year-old Democrat is casting himself as a new generation leader who would rebuild the economy and reform Wall Street.

O'Malley made the announcement Saturday in a Baltimore park, telling a crowd of about 1,000 people - "I'm running for you."

It'll be a longshot challenge to front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton. Also in the race is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

O'Malley is holding events in Iowa later Saturday and plans to be in New Hampshire on Sunday.
