PADUCAH, KY - The Whitehaven Welcome Center has been named the commonwealth's best-maintained rest area of 2014, and Members of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet gathered outside the welcome center along Interstate 24 in McCracken County Tuesday to celebrate.

"We do take it as a badge of honor to try and present the best product, if you will, for the traveling public in this area," Michael McGregor with KYTC said. "We do put great pride and effort into what you see here, which is a beautifully restored home."

The award is based on regular maintenance inspections. Whitehaven has received the best-maintained rest area distinction twice in the past five years.

Local 6 photographer Austin Vance captured images at the celebration, held at the facility centering around the restored Whitehaven mansion. The mansion houses memorabilia of Alben W. Barkley, the McCracken County native who was majority leader of the U.S. Senate and vice president of the United States from 1949 to 1952.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd said certificates were presented to employees of T&T Cleaning Service, of Boston, Kentucky, that provides janitorial services for the facility and at Kentucky rest areas in Bullitt, Carter and Oldham counties. KYTC Department of Highways District 1 maintenance staff is responsible for landscape maintenance. KYTC Division of Maintenance oversees the operation.
