Mosquito season is here: what you need to know to keep your family safe

Posted: Updated:

It's summer time and that means the return of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance, they can also be dangerous. They can carry diseases such as the West Nile virus.

That's why local health departments want you to be proactive in the fight against mosquitoes. Here's what you can do to keep your family safe.

Reduce Exposure:
- Stay indoors when mosquitoes are most active, usually between dusk, dawn, and early morning. If you are outdoors during those times, try to wear shoes and socks, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts.
- Make sure the screens on your windows and doors are on properly and don't have any tears.
- Keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.

Repel:
- Use insect repellent when you go outside.

Remove standing water:
- Mosquitoes can grow in any standing water, so make sure you eliminate stagnant water around your home.
- Popular places for mosquitoes include old tires, bird baths, flower pots, and neglected swimming pools.
