Sheriff wants people to be on alert for Publisher's Clearing House scam

Posted: Updated:
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL -

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office wants people to be on alert for a Publisher's Clearing House scam.

The scammer calls a victim and says they have won a prize from Publisher's Clearing House. The scammer then asks when they would be home for the prize to be delivered.

Publisher's Clearing House does not call ahead to schedule prize delivery and is used by scammers in an attempt to seem legitimate.

The goal of the scam is to convince victims they have won a prize but that they must pay "processing fees" or "taxes" before the prize can be claimed. The scammer usually asks the victim to use a prepaid debit card to pay for the fees or taxes.

Sheriff Bennie Vick says any request by a person you don't know for payment using a prepaid debit card should be considered a scam.
