A man was arrested on multiple charges and a police officer was hospitalized after an armed robbery and short police chase Thursday morning, according to the Carbondale Police Department.

At 4:58 a.m. Thursday the police department responded to a report of an armed robbery in progress at a business in the 500 block of East Walnut Street.

Police say a man entered the business with a handgun and demanded money and items from the clerk before fleeing. An officer stopped a vehicle leaving the scene, and police say he matched the description of the suspect in the robbery. The man tried to drive away as the officer spoke with him, dragging the officer about 100 feet.

After a short vehicle pursuit, police say the man — identified as Christopher Harris, of Carbondale — abandoned the vehicle and ran. Officers searched the area and found Harris around 7:15 a.m. in a nearby vacant house in the 300 block of East College Street.

Harris was arrested and charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery of a police officer, obstructing justice, reckless driving and fleeing to elude a police officer. Harris was jailed at the Jackson County Jail.

The officer was treated for minor injuries at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for minor injuries.
