Two dead in Weakley County shooting

WEAKLEY COUNTY, TN - A Tennessee sheriff's department says a husband shot and killed his wife, then himself, Friday.

The Weakley County Sheriff's Department says it received a call at 11:58 a.m. Friday reporting that a woman was shot by her husband near the back of their house before the armed husband went back inside the home.

Deputies arrived at the home on Highway 431 between Martin, Tennessee, and the Obion County line at 12:04 p.m. The sheriff's department  says deputies tried to call the husband by phone, but were unsuccessful. They fired tear gas into the house and deputies entered.

Once inside, the sheriff's office says deputies found the husband, 32-year-old James C. Bevis, had killed himself with the same 9 mm handgun with which he allegedly shot his wife, 27-year-old Alexandrea Bevis.

The woman had been shot several times, and the sheriff's office says two small children were on the front porch when the shooting happened. The children were carried to safety by Alexandrea's mother before deputies arrived.

The Martin Police Department provided officers to help with entry into the home, and the sheriff's department was also assisted the Martin Fire Department, Weakley County Emergency Medical Services and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
