Field surveys to help plan new Cumberland River Bridge

Posted: Updated:
LIVINGSTON COUNTY, KY -

Another step is being taken to build a new bridge over the Cumberland River.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says it has started field survey work around the site of the current US 60 Cumberland River Bridge.

The field work will have teams looking for archaeological sites, cultural and historical buildings, and mussels in the bottom of the river that may be at or near the construction zone.

They will also be checking property lines and the location of utilities.

All the information gathered will help with the planning, design, and placement of the new bridge.

Funding for a new bridge will be available in 2019.

The current bridge opened in 1931. About 5,500 vehicles cross it each day.
