Kids heading to Trooper Island

Posted: Updated:

Kids from across Kentucky are heading off to Trooper Island summer camp, a special camp sponsored by Kentucky State Police.

Kids gathered at the Kentucky State Police post in Mayfield Monday morning to head to the camp.

Boys and girls ages 10 through 12 are spending the week on Dale Hollow Lake in Clinton County where they canoe, fish, learn archery, and do other activities.

Trooper Jay Thomas says the camp creates long lasting memories.

"I was doing an event in Trigg County last year. I had a 17-year-old girl come up and lay down her Trooper Island identification card when she went 5 years ago. She was so proud of her experience that she was able to go, she packed her ID card with her. It's life impacting on a lot of these kids that are able to go," said Trooper Thomas.

Trooper Island started in 1965 and helps underprivileged children throughout the state.
