EMERALD ISLE, NC -

A Cape Girardeau teenager on a trip with a church group drowned while swimming in the ocean.

The Emerald Isle, North Carolina police department says 16-year-old Marvin Tesean Scott and another 13-year-old were in the ocean when they were hit by a large wave and carried out by a rip current.

Two men went into the water to try and save the two teenagers.

They were able to get the 13-year-old out of the water and one of the men went back into the water to try and save Tesean.

The Emerald Isle Fire Department and Rescue arrived and launched a jet ski to the area where Tesean was last seen.

He was found about 50 yards offshore and was brought in unresponsive.

A Marine helicopter was in the area for training and airlifted Tesean to a hospital.

Paramedics told police they were able to revive Tesean, but he died later at the hospital.

The police department says the family was notified through the church group that Tesean was vacationing with.
