Annual Fancy Farm Picnic raises thousands for St. Jerome Catholic Church

Posted: Updated:

The stage is set for another year of political one-liners which helps with the financial bottom line of St. Jerome Catholic Church.  Fancy Farm Picnic Organizer Daniel Burgess expects the same rowdy crowd Saturday afternoon.

"Lots of hooting and hollering," Burgess told Local 6.

The larger the crowd, he said. the larger the donation to the church.  The picnic is a fundraiser for Pastor Darrell Venters and his congregation.  Money brought in goes into the church's general fund.

"The focus is a lot on religious education and putting faith into practice," Venters said of how the money is used.

Pastor Venters said with each sandwich sold or game played you're helping fund mission trips and community service projects, totaling tens of thousands of dollars each year.  Capital improvements are also made from the money that is brought in.

"We are always looking at ways to do capital improvements over the years," Venters said.  Last year construction was completed on a new political stage.

Burgess calls the picnic one-of-a-kind family reunion the first weekend in August.  "Just a good social atmosphere," he said.
