METROPOLIS, Ill. -

SUNDAY UPDATE: Dalpe tells Local 6 the plant is not in production and personnel are beginning the investigation of the incident, including working to determine the amount of material that was released. There are still no reports of injuries and there is no evidence of offsite impact.

A chemical leak was reported at the Honeywell plant in Metropolis, Illinois Saturday night.

Honeywell Spokesperson Peter Dalpe released this statement to Local 6:

“Honeywell’s Metropolis facility experienced a leak of UF6 at approximately 6 p.m. local time Saturday. The plant declared a plant alert and notified the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as per procedure. The plant activated its emergency response procedures and emergency teams responded. Plant personnel confirmed just before 8 p.m. local time that plant personnel had stopped the leak. The plant stepped down from the plant alert to a plant emergency -- the plant’s lowest emergency status --at approximately 8:30 p.m. There have been no reports of injuries and there is no evidence of offsite impact at this time. Plant personnel are working to determine how much material was released and the plant will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.”
