Special inspection underway of leak at Honeywell Metropolis plant

Posted: Updated:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has started a special inspection of the leak at the Honeywell Metropolis plant.

Honeywell reported that the chemical UF6 leaked from the facility Saturday evening around 6:00 p.m.

The plant was put on alert and water sprays were activated to help contain the leak.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it will look at the events that lead up to the leak, verify that Honeywell followed its leak procedures, confirm information that the leaked chemical was contained within the plant's boundaries, and check the plant's detection system.

They will also review any corrective actions that Honeywell has taken or is planning to take.

The inspection is expected to last a week.

Honeywell released this statement in response to the inspection,

“Honeywell takes this incident seriously and is cooperating fully with the NRC inspection. The NRC and other regulatory agencies were alerted to the incident promptly and the plant’s emergency equipment and response teams worked as designed to contain and stop the leak without injuries. The company has made numerous improvements to its emergency response procedures over the last several years and continues to invest significantly in upgrades to the plant, including more than $60 million in projects that directly support health, safety and the environment. The company is committed to the safe operation of this and its other manufacturing facilities.”
