Police reminding drivers to drive more cautiously around school zones

Posted: Updated:
CARMI, IL -

Illinois State Police are asking drivers to be a bit more cautious as school starts up again in the Local 6 area.

Troopers say that the beginning of the school year means there will be more pedestrians and traffic around schools.

Drivers are asked to be on the lookout for children walking to and from school, and buses picking up and dropping off kids.

As a reminder, passing a stopped school bus with its lights activated and stop arm extended can result in a fine and suspension of your driver's license.

Speed limits are also enforced in school zones between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when children are present.

Troopers say they will be patrolling around school zones during the upcoming weeks to help keep kids safe.
