Fifty-one million, that is the number of school hours missed each year due to dental problems.

Local 6's Mychaela Bruner tells us how regular dental exams are an important part of preventive health care.

Healthy teeth are important to your child's overall health.

"The first thing we want is for a child to feel good about himself. We want them to have a nice smile, eat well and speak well," said pediatric dentist Dr. Beverly Largent.

For nearly 31 years, Dr. Largent has been catching and treating tooth problems in young kids.

"We look for tooth decay, we look for gum problems, we determine how well the children are brushing their teeth," said Dr. Largent.

Dr. Largent and her assistants are making it less likely for any problems to worsen as your child gets older.

"Our message is to get started on the right foot, do what you're supposed to do, keep your teeth clean and you won't have to worry about heart disease or diabetes," said Dr. Largent.

Forming good habits at a young age because a healthy smile means a healthy you.

Dr. Largent recommends brushing your teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day.

If left untreated, tooth decay can cause the loss of a tooth within a year.  That is why it is important to go to the dentist every six months.

For those of you with dentures, it is still important to visit the dentist frequently.
