Alcohol sales vote sought in Ohio County's Beaver Dam

Posted: Updated:

A western Kentucky man says he has nearly enough signatures to hold a special election on alcohol sales in the city of Beaver Dam.
Ohio County resident Michael Adkins tells the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer that he has obtained nearly 250 signatures so far, about 50 short of the 300 required by state election laws to put a question before Beaver Dam voters. The city's population is about 3,500.
Adkins says liquor sales would be economically advantageous at a time when city leaders are pushing for tourism and corporate activity.
Ohio County currently does not allow legal sales within county boundaries.
If at least 300 signatures are reached, the Ohio County Clerk's Office will verify that the signatures are from Beaver Dam residents. From there, the election must be held within 60-90 days.
