Missouri man found in tree after vehicle, foot pursuit

Posted: Updated:

The Mississippi County Sheriff's Department in Missouri says a man was arrested late Wednesday night after a high speed chase that "traversed the county."

The sheriff's department says its deputies began pursuit of 23-year-old Harlin Van Owens of East Prairie, Missouri, when dispatchers alerted them that East Prairie police officers had just terminated a pursuit of him. There was an active parole warrant for Owens in Mississippi County.

Deputies found Owens' vehicle on a levee road near Belmont and initiated a traffic stop. The sheriff's department says Owens stopped briefly but then drove off onto County Road 507 at a high rate of speed. Near Wolf Island, Owens turned and drove through a planted field before returning to a county road, and the chase continued onto County Road 520.

The sheriff's department says the vehicle pursuit ended when Owens stopped suddenly in the road, which caused a patrol vehicle to hit the back of Owens' vehicle. Owens then ran into the woods.

Authorities conducted a ground search with the Missouri Highway Patrol canine unit, then Sheriff Keith Moore requested helicopter surveillance from a local pilot. After nightfall, deputies entered the woods and found Owens hiding in a tree deep within. He was arrested and jailed in the Mississippi County Detention Center.

Owens was charged with second degree attempted assault of a law enforcement officer, driving while revoked, first degree property damage, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, and resisting arrest by fleeing.
