Child hospitalized, father jailed after single-vehicle wreck

Posted: Updated:

A child was taken to a hospital and a father was jailed Monday afternoon after a single vehicle wreck, according to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department.

The sheriff's department says deputies responded to the scene of the wreck in 700 block of Berger Road around 5:43 p.m. Monday. There, deputies and first responders found 37-year-old Travis Greer of Benton, Kentucky, holding his 3 year old son on the driver's side of a 2002 Pontiac Aztec.

Deputies say Greer was driving eastbound on Benton Road when he went over a hill crest and into a curve. He left the roadway in the curve, hitting a culvert. The vehicle came to a final rest facing southbound, halfway on Berger Road and halfway in a parking lot.

The sheriff's department says Witnesses reported seeing the crash and that they believed Greer was traveling at a high rate of speed. Witnesses also said they saw him leaving the vehicle with his injured 3-year old-son inside and walking to the other side of the road to throw a bag in tall grass.

Deputies later found the bag, which the department says contained a bottle of alcohol.

Greer is accused of driving while intoxicated and of having not secured his child in the child seat correctly. The sheriff's department said it believes the child left the child seat upon impact and traveled to the front of the vehicle, hitting his head on the windshield.

The child suffered injuries to his head and was taken by Mercy EMS to a local hospital.

Greer was charged with operating a motor vehicle under influence of alcohol (Aggravated Circumstances) on the second offense, tampering with physical evidence, first degree wanton endangerment, failure of non-owner operator to maintain required insurance, first degree criminal mischief, first degree assault, and failure to use a child restraint device in a vehicle.
