Local health department cutting hours due to lack of state budget

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. -

An Illinois health department is cutting it hours due to the lack of a state budget.

On Wednesday, the Jackson County Board of Health voted to reduce the hours worked by health department employees and cease operations on Fridays.

The board said the reduction in hours and staff work schedules will help keep the department financially afloat through the upcoming fiscal year which begins on December 1.

It also means the department can keep funding programs such as WIC and Family Planning.

Starting December 1, the Jackson County Health Department will be open Monday through Thursday and closed on Fridays. Full-time employees will have their work week hours reduced from 35 to 33 hours. That is about a 6% pay cut.

The facility will be open longer hours Monday through Thursday. Exact times have not been determined yet.
