FRANKFORT, KY (AP) -

One of the two finalists to become the next Kentucky commissioner of education has withdrawn from consideration, and the Education Department says the other candidate is likely to be named to the post.

Board of Education Chairman Roger Marcum said in a news release Friday night that Stephen Pruitt, a Georgia educator and currently senior vice president of an independent education reform organization, has indicated he would accept the job if it is offered.

The Education Department said in the release that Christopher Koch withdrew from consideration Friday afternoon. Koch is interim president of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and former Illinois education commissioner.

Pruitt has served at Achieve Inc. since 2010.

Following a background check, the department said the board will vote probably within the next few weeks.

Former Commissioner Terry Holliday retired this week.
