EDDYVILLE, KY -

The Kentucky State Police says a woman has been charged in relation to the fatal shooting of a state trooper Sunday night.

KSP says 18-year-old Ambrea R.J. Shanks of Florissant, Missouri, has been charged with first degree hindering prosecution or apprehension regarding the shooting death of Trooper Joseph Ponder. The trooper was shot after conducting a traffic stop, when the suspect — Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks — fled before allegedly shooting the trooper.

State police say Shanks was a passenger in Johnson-Shanks' vehicle and is his niece. There were three other passengers in the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop: a 22-year-old woman and two children under the age of 6. State police say the children were released to a relative.

Shanks was jailed in the Caldwell County Jail.

An autopsy was conducted on Ponder Monday in Louisville, and the results are pending.  An autopsy is scheduled for Johnson-Shanks on Sept.15 in Madisonville.
