Kentucky State Police afternoon news conference on fatal shooting of trooper
By Staff report
LYON COUNTY, Ky. -
The Kentucky State Police held a news conference Monday at 4 p.m. regarding it's investigation of the shooting death of a trooper, announcing an arrest of a woman at the scene at the time of the shooting.
Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder was fatally shot after conducting a traffic stop, when the suspect — Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks — fled before allegedly shooting the trooper. Police later found Johnson-Shanks. State police said Johnson-Shanks still had a gun when they found him, and they ordered him to put it down. When he refused, one of the officers fired and hit him. He died at a hospital Monday morning.
A woman state police identified as Johnson-Shanks' niece now faces a charge of first degree hindering prosecution or apprehension in the incident. She, as well as another woman and two children, was in the vehicle when the shooting happened, according to KSP.
