OWENSBORO, KY (AP) -

Kentucky's major party candidates for governor promised to give police officers a raise and improve the security of their retirement benefits while courting votes during a meeting of the state's sheriffs on the day of a slain Kentucky State Police officer's funeral.

Republican Matt Bevin and Democrat Jack Conway spoke during the Kentucky Sheriff's Association's annual meeting in Owensboro. Sheriffs from the state's 120 counties attended the meeting as flags in the parking lot of the convention center stood at half-staff to honor Trooper Cameron Ponder, who was shot and killed Sunday following a high-speed chase.

Bevin and Conway both promised to increase incentive pay for officers to complete mandatory training. And they said they would work to improve the solvency of the state's public pension system.
