New reports indicate Joseph Johnson-Shanks had a similar encounter to the one that resulted in the death of Kentucky State Trooper Cameron Ponder involving a gun with police last year.
People Magazine reports it obtained a police report from an arrest in Franklin County, Illinois, on Christmas Day in December of 2014. A state trooper pulled Johnson-Shanks over for speeding.
The report states when the trooper approached the car, Johnson-Shanks placed his hand on a gun in his glove compartment.
Johnson-Shanks was arrested and later pleaded guilty on weapons charges. He was conditionally discharged for 30 months. Ponder's death took place in that time frame.
