Two scams being reported in Local 6 area

Posted: Updated:
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL -

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office says residents should be on the lookout for two scams in the area.

In the first scam, a victim receives a call from a phone number that appears to be the Williamson County Sheriff's Office or the Williamson County courthouse. The scammers tells the victim that there is an active warrant out for them and that if money isn't transfer to the scammer, police will come and arrest the victim.

The Sheriff's Office says arrests warrants are never handled this way and any attempt to get you to send money through a transfer service is usually a scam.

The second scam is on Facebook. Hackers gain access to a person's Facebook account and then send messages about Federal Grant Opportunities to that person's friends. The message links to a website that claims that approval for the grants is automatic and that you can receive a $100,000 by simply sending in a $300 application fee. People who send in the fee are usually contacted again for more money to pay for processing fees or customs issues.

Sheriff Bennie Vick says legitimate state and federal grants have an extensive application process and do not include Facebook.
