Former WKU swimmer sues over alleged hazing

LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) -

A former Western Kentucky swimmer whose allegations of hazing led to a five-year suspension of the school's program has filed a federal lawsuit claiming he suffered physical, mental and emotional abuse at the school.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, says Collin Craig attended Western in fall 2014 on scholarship, but his dream "turned into a nightmare" when older teammates made threatening comments and forced him to participate in degrading activities including drinking alcohol while being struck in the testicles.

The lawsuit asks for a jury trial and unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

The university announced in April that it had suspended its swimming and diving programs after an investigation of hazing incidents and violations of Title IX sexual misconduct and assault.

School spokesman Bob Skipper said Friday that the university conducted a thorough investigation and will defend the lawsuit.
