Name of soldier killed in training accident at Fort Campbell released

FORT CAMPBELL, KY -

The name of the soldier fatally shot during a training exercise Tuesday at Fort Campbell has been released. 

Private first class Kevin J. Rodriguez, an infantryman with Company A, First Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, third Brigade Combat Team "Rakkasans," was pronounced dead at about 10:20 a.m. at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital on Fort Campbell, according to the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division. 

A native of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, the 101st Airborne Division says 22-year-old Rodriguez enlisted in the Army in Oct. 2013, completing one station unit training at Fort Benning, Georgia, as an infantryman. After graduating from training, he was assigned as an infantryman in Company A, First Battalion., 187th Infantry Regiment in April 2014.

Rodriguez completed a nine-month deployment with the Rakkasans in June of this year. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Marksmanship Badge.

The 101st Airborne Division says Rodriguez is survived by his father, Daniel Rodriguez, and his mother, Joan Pino-Caban, both of Patterson, New Jersey. 

The incident is under investigation.
