Zack Pittman likely to finish rehab in early November

PADUCAH, Ky -

Since starting rehab in July, Zack Pittman's will to power through adversity earned him the nickname 'Superman.'

"I don't really know where it started from.  Just different people saying it so it just kind of stuck," said his mom Laurie.

She says Zack is slowly regaining his strength.  Staff at Frazier Rehab in Louisville are teaching him how to walk and write again.  One of Laurie's proudest moments came when Zack wrote her a message.  "He automatically started writing mom.  Of course I really lost it then because that's all I've been wanting him to do is to say mom but at least he wrote it," she said with a smile.

Zack is not able to talk yet, but he is able to breathe on his own.  Right now, Laurie says some of Zack's tendons are shortening since he's been confined to a bed for months.  Doctors have him in casts to straighten his arms and legs and she says he's showing improvement.

"He's gained eight pounds.  He's just getting stronger every day," Laurie told Local 6's Robert Bradfield.  Another proud moment for her was celebrating Zack's 12th birthday.  He spent more than a month in a coma and doctors told Laurie he likely wouldn't make it.

"They told me he wasn't going to have that birthday and he absolutely did," she said.

According to Laurie, Zack will likely be discharged from rehab in early November.  She is planning a happy homecoming with his family and friends.
