Protesters claim McDonald's supplier abusing chickens

PADUCAH, KY -

A disturbing site outside the McDonald's on Jackson Street in Paducah on Wednesday.

Protesters stood next to a giant chicken covered in blood.

The protesters tell us they wanted to alert the lunch crowd about the cruelty behind the fast food's Chicken McNuggets.

Mercy for Animals' Jeni Haines says a recent undercover investigation exposed birds being abused at a McDonald's supplier.

"McDonald's raises and kills chickens that would shock and horrify most Americans," says Jeni Haines, national campaign coordinator for Mercy for Animals. "As a civilized society we have a moral obligation to protect all animals from needless cruelty and violence."

Haines says Paducah is the 28th stop on a multi-city protest tour across the country.

WPSD reached out to McDonald's and they sent us this statement:

"We believe treating animals with care and respect is an integral part of a responsible supply chain. We require humane treatment of animals in our supply chain, and work with all of our suppliers to reinforce our expectations around animal health and welfare at the farm level."
