Here are six things to know for today.

Kentucky has a new governor this morning. Republican Matt Bevin defeated Democrat Jack Conway making Bevin the second Republican governor of Kentucky in 40 years.

We expect to learn more about the death of an Illinois police officer today. A news conference is scheduled for this morning in Fox Lake. Authorities are expected to announce that Lieutenant Charles Joseph Gliniewicz killed himself. 

Ohio voters said no to legalizing medical and recreational marijuana. Governor John Kasich, who is one of the Republicans running for president, praised the results in a statewide by saying, "Ohioans said no to easy access to drugs and instead chose a path that helps strengthen families and communities."

Frederick Daack will be formally sentenced today. Daack accepted a plea deal back in June to serve three years in prison, followed by five years probation. He used an electronic device to procure a minor in a sexual performance. He must also register as a sex offender.

Sign-ups for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, through West Kentucky Allied Services starts today. Applications will be sorted alphabetically by last name.

Today is National Candy Day. So celebrate today with a sweet treat. Chances are there is still plenty of candy lying around your home leftover from Halloween.
