Group looks to legalize packaged alcohol sales in Graves County

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. -

Chelsea Riley's collecting signatures for packaged alcohol sales that she hopes will move Graves County forward.

"Very exciting," Riley said.

She's part of the group Vote Graves County Wet that's trying to make packaged alcohol sales legal throughout the county. Riley said she has more than 4,000 signatures and plans to turn them in on Monday. "Now that we are ready, we're confidant enough," she said.

County Clerk Barry Kennemore must verify more than 2,200 of the signatures. Then, the county judge executive would set an election between 60 and 90 days. Kennemore says it would come with a hefty price tag. "Somewhere between $45,000 and $50,000," Kennemore told Local 6.

That's additional taxpayer money he said shouldn't have to be spent if state law would allow for special elections to be combined with other elections. He's pushing for the change next year.

"If we have another one of these elections, just put it on the next election whether it's a primary or a general election," he said.

For now, Riley believes she has the support to not only put this on the ballot, but win, too. "The county has been very dry for as long as I can remember. It's time for a change," Riley said.
