Son charged with murder after mother and father were found dead in Mississippi River

Posted: Updated:

The son of two people who were found dead in the Mississippi River has been charged with their murders.
Miner, Missouri Police Chief Chris Griggs says Thomas Wayne McRoy was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of criminal action for the deaths of Larry and Roxann E McRoy.

Griggs says Larry and Roxann were reported missing Tuesday morning. Their other son, who lives in St. Louis, asked police to check in on the two here at their home.

“He called us concerned. He hadn't talk to his mom for a couple of days. Turns out last time somebody actually talked to Roxann was on Monday night,” Griggs said.

Police say Thomas McRoy let them search the home Tuesday morning, but he was gone when they returned later in the day.
Larry's body was found in the Mississippi River near the River Boat Ferry dock in Dorena, Missouri on Tuesday.

Missouri State Highway Patrol later found and took McRoy into custody in Carter County Tuesday night.
Roxanne's body was found Wednesday morning near the same location.

The chief said the two were retired, well known, as well as liked in the community.

“This is a case of two senseless acts. It absolutely is. These are very good people. They’re both retired. They were hard-working people. They had a home, they were established, they had grandchildren,” Griggs said.

McRoy is being held in the Scott County Jail under a $200,000 cash bond.

The last homicide case in Miner was in the 1980's.

The Miner Police Chief wants to thank the South East Missouri Major Case Squad, Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Scott County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi County Sheriff’s Department, and Missouri’s State Highway Patrol for assisting in the investigation.
